If your question is not answered, our service team will be happy to help you at info@thecooltool.com further.
Generally
- From what age are the "The cool tool" products recommended?
- We recommend PLAYmake 4in1 workshop from the age of 5.
- UNIMAT 1 Basic from 8 years. If children are guided by adults, they can work with them earlier.
- UNIMAT 1 Classic from 12 years. Skilled children and inventors or those who already have experience with UNIMAT 1 Basic, correspondingly earlier.
- Which materials can be processed with UNIMAT?
- Saw: Plywood and solid wood up to 7mm, balsa wood up to 20mm, plastics and thin sheet metal
- Wood lathe: all types of wood, short-grained and hard woods such as beech, maple and fruit wood are particularly beautiful. For the beginner we recommend basswood. This is relatively soft and gives a nice surface.
- Lathe: all types of wood, fibre-free plastics, soft and non-ferrous metals
- UNIMAT 1 Classic milling machine: Wood and plastics
- What is the accuracy of the machines?
- UNIMAT 1 Basic: Depends on the skill of the user, all machines are operated with the free hand.
- UNIMAT 1 Classic: Precision around 0.5mm, handwheel scale division is 0.1mm
- How long is the guarantee?
- We offer a 5-year guarantee on our UNIMAT and PLAYmake products. Wearing parts are excluded from this guarantee. Examples of warranty parts are: Motor, transformer, etc. / Examples of wearing parts: saw blades, belts, sandpaper, etc. We offer a 2-year warranty on our Styro-Cut 3D.
- Why is the jigsaw childproof?
- The stroke of the saw blade and thus the cutting path of the teeth is only approx. 4mm. The skin can move this short distance and is not injured. A cut in the material is only made with rigid materials such as wood, plastic or metal, as these do not move.

- Can steel also be machined with UNIMAT?
- Steel cannot be machined with the UNIMAT machines.
-
Numerous UNIMAT accessories enable a variety of upgrade options even with the UNIMAT Basic.
The supporting parts UNIMAT 1 Basis and Classic are aluminum profiles.
- What is the difference between UNIMAT 1 Basic and Classic?
-
UNIMAT1 BASIC is ideal for model building beginners due to its multifunctionality and ideal for introducing children to the world of machine tools due to its child safety. The devices are functionally identical to large industrial machines and differ from them only in terms of dimensions and the 12V drive.
The main area of application for the BASIC machine set is woodworking. BASIC is particularly recommended for creative woodturning and jigsaw models where the shaping is done with the free hand.
UNIMAT 1 Classic is ideal for model builders who also want to produce functional models. It contains all the parts of the Basic box and much more: slides and clamping devices to fix the workpiece (e.g. the axle of an RC car) and the tool (e.g. the lathe tool) precisely in any position and at any angle you choose.
As additional machine tool variants, the CLASSIC construction kit contains the elements for building a drill press, a lathe, a horizontal and a vertical milling machine.
We recommend:
UNIMAT 1 Basic: for creative free-hand work on wood and plastics
UNIMAT 1 Classic: for functional model building with wood and plastic and wherever greater accuracy is required.
Optionally, using Accesories countless other machine tools are constructed. The modular system offers the hobby mechanical engineer every opportunity to realize his technical dreams and ideas. The working gear milling machine is nothing special, try tinkering with a spiral milling machine.... Anything imaginable is possible, our extensive documentation offers those interested the tools for entering the world of mechanical engineering.
- How do you change the jigsaw blade?
- The new saw blade cannot be attached or is easier to remove from the holder: Check whether the rest of the old jigsaw blade has been completely removed. UNIMAT instructions page 10 + 11
- The saw blade cannot be tightened: Check whether the screw grips. If necessary change the metal ring (clamping socket) and the screw - UNIMAT instructions page 10 + 11
- The motor turns, but the saw does not move or the saw blade stops: Check whether the eccentric is correctly seated in the jigsaw housing - UNIMAT instructions page 10 + 11
- How do you say correctly?
- The wood vibrates with the saw blade -> Press the wood firmly onto the saw table when cutting Instructions UNIMAT 1 Basic page 10+11
- The saw blade breaks off when cutting a curve: Always push the wood off the saw table in the direction of the arrow while the wood is being rotated around the saw blade. If the saw blade is crooked, it will be pushed to the side and break.
- What is the difference between UNIMAT MetalLine and UNIMAT 1?
- The focus here is on increased precision, which is required above all when processing metals for model making. The functions of the construction set are comparable to those of the Classic set. There is an upgrade set (162130) for woodworking.
- How do you turn correctly?
-
Turning wood remains standing:
When turning, the Hokz stops, but the motor keeps turning:
Check whether the driver is properly hammered into the wood -> if the driver is hammered in too easily, the wood can spin - see Unimat instructions page 8
Check that the union nut (U48) is properly tightened so that the driver does not slip.
The wood and the motor stop slightly:
Check whether the turning knife is being held correctly - more information on UNIMAT instructions, page 9
Do not press the turning knife too hard into the wood, so that the wood can continue to turn and the chips "remove with feeling"
The wood runs out of round (wobbles):
Determine the exact center point with the center finder. A minor imbalance/out-of-round is normal.
Remove 1-2mm of material over the length of the workpiece before starting the actual workpiece form.
